MAJOR regeneration plans for the town centre are set to be tweaked as proposals for a roof over The Deck are unveiled.
The new roof would be added over a new public open space in The Lexicon, meaning events can take place underneath the canopy all-year-round.
According to developers of The Deck, events could include:
- A food market / Christmas market
- Concerts / fashion shows
- A temporary ice rink
- An ‘Open Air’ Cinema

Piper Whitlock’s designs for The Deck — which will go up where the former Bentalls store was — were first approved by the council in 2017.
The architects have now submitted new tweaks to the green-lit plans, with the addition of the new roof being the main alteration.
A planning document read: “[The roof] is designed to add to the building by providing a more comfortable environment throughout various weather conditions and improve the opportunities for activities in the town centre throughout the year.

“The covered event space will offer a unique and exciting environment to add yet another dynamic aspect of the town centre’s regeneration and complete the masterplans aspiration for a figure-of-eight circuit around the town centre.”
Piper Whitlock’s roof designers wanted to create a ‘cathedral-like’ structure that was partly connected to other roof coverings around The Lexicon development that “appears to float over the space” beneath it.
The roof addition is one of a number of other changes proposed as part of the tweaked plans.

Other changes include merging two new units will merge to form one big space, which will be used for leisure purposes.
The smaller of these units would have faced onto The Ring, but this will no longer be the plan.
Three units fronting onto Bull Square have been changed so their potential mezzanine areas can be utilised for units above them.
In March it was announced Hollywood Bowl and The Botanist cocktail bar would be two new tenants moving into The Deck.
The old Bentalls unit will be transformed into a 'vibrant', new covered public space with new food and retail units linking The Lexicon with Princess Square.
