It is the first singles success of the year for the Wokingham ace and the first British title of 2014 for Willis and partner Lewis Burton.

However, the pair have been in superb form for the past six months, reaching their eighth consecutive doubles final at Tipton.

The win is even more impressive given that Willis had come through a tough semi-final on the same day as the doubles final.

He fought back from a set down to beat Italian Luca Vanni, who had beaten him recently in Israel, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Willis and Burton then took on top seeds Dave Rice and Sean Thornley and again they had to come from a set down after losing the opener 6-3.

But the A1-Pharmaceuticals-sponsored pair fought back to take the match 3-6, 6-7, 10-5 and win their 10th doubles title in the last six months.

Willis followed up with an enthralling victory in the singles over Irish number three Sam Barry, a match that was watched by more than 100 people, including the Lord Mayor of Tipton.

The Wokingham player opened the match with a blistering ace, but then found himself facing two break points at 15-40.

He cleverly saved both with some great net play, and after holding serve raced to an early 4-1 lead.

But Barry battled back and forced a tiebreak, which Willis won with a half-volley, cross-court stunner.

Barry got off to the better start in the second set, with an early break securing a 3-0 lead. However, Willis then reeled off six of the next seven games to capture his first singles title of 2014 7-6(4), 6-4.

Speaking afterwards, Willis said: “I’ve had a great start to the year winning doubles titles in Israel and Thailand, but after finishing runner-up in Thailand two weeks ago, and now winning this title, my singles game is definitely coming together too.” Willis is now taking a two-week training block before he returns to competitive action.
