Celebrities get their nine irons out for charity golf event

Jamie Redknapp, Vernon Kay, Sir Steve Redgrave and Mike Tindall were among the stars at Sunningdale Golf Club's annual celebrity golf day which has raised £2.5m since it started 20 years ago.

The money raised is for CLIC Sargent, a charity offering support to children and young people suffering from cancer.

Chris Carberry, pictured, said: “Golf has been a massive part of my life, it gave me a new direction in life and a new found passion. I played off 8 by the time I had to stop playing due to my illness, but it’s something I plan on getting back into and my day at Sunningdale has definitely spurred me on.

“It was great to meet all the celebrities, spend time on this amazing course and share my story with everyone to raise awareness of cancer and CLIC Sargent’s work. I had brilliant support from my CLIC Sargent social worker through everything and it feels good to give something back.”

Vernon Kay added: “What a great way to celebrate 20 years of this event by going out on this amazing golf course, having fun and raising vital awareness and funds during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“Meeting Chris and hearing him share his story really highlights the importance of CLIC Sargent’s support and that we need to keep going to help families like his”

Rachel Kirby-Rider, Director of Income and Engagement at CLIC Sargent, explained how valuable events like this are to the charity, and those effected.

She said: “We can’t thank Sunningdale Golf Club, our celebrity supporters and our corporate partners enough for their support over the past 20 years which has made the charity golf day such a success.

“All the funds raised from this fantastic event help in our fight for young lives like Chris against cancer.”
