RESIDENTS are being asking to clear clutter that may be blocking an escape route by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS).

RBFRS are encouraging families to make sure they know how to get out a building safely in the event of a fire.

Group Manager, Paul Thomas, said: “It’s very important to have a plan in place in case of an emergency. If everybody in your household knows the escape plan, they will have a much better chance of getting out safely should a fire break out.”

Paul believes having a smoke alarm on every level gives time to escape.

He added: “Additionally, you should make sure you have a smoke alarm fitted on every level of your home to provide you with an early warning and give you vital time to escape.

"If you already have an escape plan in place, make sure that every member or guest in your household knows it and what to do in an emergency, it could save lives.”

RBFRS have put together several tips this week for residents to follow including clearing escape routes, keeping door and window keys in an accessible place and testing smoke alarm regularly.
