RESIDENTS are being encouraged to avoid the misconceptions about sprinklers and install them as part of a national awareness week.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is supporting National Sprinkler Week, which is a National Fire Chiefs Council campaign running from May 19 to May 24.

During the week RBFRS is hoping to stop people’s common misconceptions about sprinklers and encourage them to consider installing them.

Tony Deacon, area manager, said: “The case for installing sprinkler systems is compelling; they save lives and reduce injuries, protect firefighters who attend incidents and reduce the amount of damage to both property and the environment from fire.

“Sprinklers are the most effective way to ensure that fires are suppressed or even extinguished before the fire and rescue service can arrive.”

The fire service believes that some of the common misconceptions include that sprinklers are too expensive, they can go off accidentally and the water damage is as bad as any fire damage.

As part of their commitments to provide advice in relation to fire safety standards the RBFRS are devoted to increasing the installation of sprinklers and other fire suppression systems.
