A DEDICATED headteacher is taking part in a physical 65 mile challenge to raise money so that schools can become a "happier place."

Simon Barber from Ludgrove School in Wokingham is fundraising for Heads Up for Place2Be, joining 21 other headteachers for a challenge of a lifetime.

The challenge in Pembrokeshire, involves hiking, cycling and sea kayaking to raise money for a Place2Be, a charity which supports children's mental health and wellbeing in schools.

In total, Simon has raised £10,745 and the team hope to get to £100,000.

He said: "The dialogue is more open now about mental health and it is more acknowledged.

"The brain is the most amazing organ and it needs to be looked after, if pupils are mentally and physically healthy they will be happier and thrive in school.

"A lot of the students think I am mad for taking part in the challenge and my own children think I am bonkers, but the parents have been so supportive."

Simon feels excited to be taking part in the challenge and has been training at a gym in Wokingham.

However, he feels that the hills and wind will make it hard for him and the cycling part of the challenge.

The headteacher at the Wokingham school, added: "This is the time to make a difference. I just want to raise a bit of money and help kids who are struggling to be happier. "

Place2Be is a national charity with an aim to improve mental wellbeing of children.

The charity believe children should not have to face mental health problems alone and want to make sure children have access to support so they can thrive in education.

The challenge has been generously sponsored by Featherstone Partners, an investment management firm that offers tax-efficient school fee planning advice.
