A 'DANGEROUS' underpass which was pitch black for over a week has finally had lighting installed after residents feared for their safety.
The Downshire Way subway was blocked off during the A322 highways improvements, making pedestrians take alternative routes to get to the other side of Wildridings.
The underpass opened last week but one resident contacted the News about how he felt "unsafe" as it was pitch black. Maciej Partyka, who lives in Wildridings, said: "After a week of darkness, the light was finally switched on.
"I felt very unsafe walking and I recommended my son to avoid the underpass after dark."
The resident expressed his concerns about the underpass already being a problem at night with youth groups using it as a spot for drugs and drinking.
However, locals took to social media to share that the underpass has finally got lighting making it safer at night.
Councillor Thomas Parker, ward member for Wildridings and Central, said: “Thanks to everyone who reported this, it was important that we got the lights back on as I know this has been of concern to many residents, who have already been dealing with the difficulties of the underpass being closed for 8 weeks.
“The project is still on schedule and I highly recommend residents report any concerns directly to the Council as I know Nick Rose and his team are closely monitoring the Downshire Way project to ensure things go as smoothly as possible.”
