Volunteers highlighted the scale of unnecessary plastic packaging on foodstuffs by showing customers how much is being used.

A total of 53 shoppers donated plastic across the two supermarkets, unwrapping 140 pieces of unnecessary plastic packaging.

The charity has said if everyone did this every week for one year across the two Crowthorne supermarkets, it would gather more than 7,000 pieces of plastic packaging.

Donna Mischefski, lead volunteer for the event, added: This is the second year we have run Mass Unwrap, while we can see some progress, we are still shocked at the scale of unnecessary packaging.

"We appreciated the collaboration of Coop and Lidl, but there is a clear message that shoppers expect to see a change."

The community mass unwrap event also highlighted shoppers 'pet peeves' with many saying they hate 'unnecessary' packing on fruit and vegetables.
