PARK users are urging people not to litter after a man spent his one hour of daily exercise during lockdown picking up rubbish.

Homemade posters and notices have been stuck on bins in Lily Hill Park discouraging people from leaving their litter on the floor.

Dog owners are also being asked to take their poo bags home with them if they can't fit the bags in the bins provided.

A public post on a local community page highlighted the new posters put up in the park.

One person called Jonah Jay explained that he cleaned the mess as he 'occasionally stepped in dog mess' in the past.

He said on the public page: "I cleaned up the mess yesterday. It was very unpleasant to do so and I’m thankful for a strong stomach. I use the park for my fitness and have occasionally stepped in dog mess. I took the decision to clean up to make the park look nice again. I spoke to a few people who thanked me and I really appreciate that, and your thanks too!"

It comes after ward councillor Ian Kirke, explained how the public is being asked to take litter and dog waste home as there are less refuse collectors due to the coronavirus.

He expressed his frustrations towards the amount of litter being left behind and said: "Responsible dog owners significantly outnumber those that ignore these common sense measures and if any of the latter group read this, I would add that a seemingly low level of anti-social behaviour has a huge impact on the resilience of officers across the Borough and understandably causes anxiety to other residents."

As such, the News spoke to dog walker Jake Wawman, who lives in Bullbrook and uses Lily Hill Park to walk his dog Bella and get his daily exercise during the lockdown.

Mr Wawman said: "This is not the first time I have seen it unfortunately. It is there on a daily basis and there are about 5-8 other bins around the park that are exactly the same, also you see Redbull and coke cans just near the bin as well.

"It makes me feel frustrated because that is our local park and hundreds of dogs go there daily and it’s only probably a small five per cent of owners can't pick up their dogs poo or hold onto it until they can find a bin and that five per cent are giving us good dog owners a bad reputation."
