A traveller site in Finchampstead could be expanded in plans described as “inappropriate” by the local parish council.
The site – at land next to 166 Nine Mile Ride – currently has four caravan pitches and an additional four would be added if the plans are approved by Wokingham Borough Council (WBC).
WBC’s Planning committee will vote on the plans at land next to 166 Nine Mile Ride next Wednesday (August 12).

Finchampstead Parish Council has objected to the “inappropriate development” of the site, saying it would cause privacy issues for nearby residents and arguing “WBC currently has adequate provisions for gypsy and traveller pitches”.
South Finchampstead ward councillor Simon Weeks asked for the proposal to be brought to the Planning committee due to concerns from neighbours including:
- Noise, light, odour and air pollution
- Impact on wildlife and loss of trees
- Impact on privacy of residents at The Dittons
- Lack of need for additional development in Finchampstead
- Overdevelopment and not in character with the area
Eleven objections have been received from the residents of neighbouring properties.
The applicant, Mr D Reed of 166 Nine Mile Ride, said the development would make efficient use of an appropriately and sustainably located site.
It says it will meet a need in the borough for additional pitches at an established gypsy and traveller site, without an adverse effect on the character and appearance of the area.

And council officers have backed the plan, saying it will help towards meeting its statutory duty to provide accommodation for cultural Gypsies and Travellers and provide greater flexibility and certainty of future supply.
The site is included in the council’s draft local plan for four additional caravan pitches and officers say the development would not have a detrimental impact neighbours, road safety or the environment.
There are currently eight parking spaces and an additional eight would be added.
