THE LATEST Coronavirus rules state that as of Monday, September 14, social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal and may result in fines. But can you still share a car with people outside your household?

Can I share a car under new rules?
Yes, but under certain conditions. Government guidance suggests you 'try not to share a vehicle with those outside your household or support bubble'.
If you need to share a car with someone outside of your support bubble, you need to share the car with the same people each time.

You must keep to groups of up to six at one time, otherwise, you’ll be breaking the law.
Additionally, the guidance states that:
- You open windows for ventilation
- Drivers and passengers are encouraged to wear a face covering
- Clean your car between journeys, especially door handles and areas people are most likely to touch
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after completing your journey
What are the sitting recommendations?
Government advice states that you should travel facing away from the driver or other passengers, or if that's not possible, sit side-by-side or behind other people, rather than facing them.
Also, where possible, sit as far away from car users outside of your household or support bubble as much as you can.
If in doubt, ask the driver what would be the preferred sitting arrangement.
What are the coronavirus rules for taking taxis and Ubers?
People taking a taxi or private hire cars should wear a face covering. If you do not, the driver may be entitled to refuse to accept you.

Uber, for instance, has made wearing masks mandatory for passengers and drivers alike. Both parties are entitled to cancel the ride if the other one is not wearing a face covering. Children under the age of 11 are exempt, and so are passengers who may have medical reasons not to wear face coverings.
Do we need to wear face coverings?
You need to wear a face mask when taking a taxi or private hire vehicles. You are also strongly encouraged to wear face covering when sharing a vehicle with people outside of your household or support bubble.
