MORE THAN 1,500 bin collections were missed by the Wokingham Borough Council since 2019 up to now, it was revealed recently.

The data comes from a Freedom of Information request made to the council earlier this year, asking how many bin collections had been missed over the last three years, broken down for each year.

As a result of this, the Wokingham Borough Council revealed that during 2017/18, a total of 759 missed bin collections were reported, from 2018/19 824 were reported, and from 2019/20, a staggering 1,714 bins were not collected when they were supposed to (the data being accurate up until September 2020).

In response to this, a spokesman for the Wokingham Borough Council said: "In April 2019, the council introduced food waste recycling and made some changes to the garden waste collections.

"This temporarily increased the number of missed collections during the rollout period.

"This number has now returned to pre 2019/20 figures before these changes were introduced.

"Wokingham’s missed waste and recycling collection rate is currently at 8 missed collections per 100,000, which is the industry standard for measuring, and well below the 30 missed collections per 100,000 that we set as the key performance indicator for our waste and recycling collection service.

"Considering the strain on all our services during the Covid-19 pandemic, the council is proud that not only have we maintained all of our services at a time when other councils were stopping services, but we also brought the number of missed collections back down to the pre April 2019 levels."
