Berkshire's motorways are some of the slowest in the UK, according to a new study.

The research analysed traffic data from the Department for Transport from 2020, which showed the average speed on roads around the country.

Four of the five slowest stretches of motorway are in Berkshire. 

It revealed that Reading was the UK’s second slowest area for motorway drivers with an average speed of 52.2mph, followed by Slough with an average speed of 52.9mph.

Wokingham has the fourth slowest UK average of 53.5mph, with Bracknell Forest coming in fifth (53.6mph).

Dan Hutson, head of motor insurance at www.comparethemarket.com, said:“It can be really frustrating for a driver to get caught in traffic jams or stuck on a slow moving motorway, because we rely on these networks to cover distance quickly.

"Finding alternative routes, other modes of transport or avoiding these slow stretches during peak hours would be the best option to make sure you aren’t caught in a jam. 

“If you are embarking on a longer road trip this summer then don’t forget to get your car serviced and have all the necessary cover in place in case of any accidents or breakdowns.”
