IF YOU have driven on the M4 over the past couple of years you are likely to have comes across one of the temporary speed limits in place on the motorway.

Upgrading junctions 3-12 of the M4 to make it a smart motorway has meant temporary speed limits of 50 and 60mph have been enforced on the road as works progress.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been used to monitor the average speed of traffic over sections of the road.

The temporary speed limits are legally enforceable, meaning drivers who exceed this top speed are liable to penalties.

And people do get fined, as court filings show.

Here are some Berkshire motorists who have been in court for breaking the temporary speed limit on the M4 and where they got caught.

Nathan Holden, 32, of Arrowsmith Way, Thatcham, was fined £123 for going 63mph on the M4 on November 4, 2020.

He was caught out at Bray, near Maidenhead, where the speed limit was 50mph.

Appearing at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court (WMC) on Tuesday, September 21, he was also given three points on his licence.

Karim Mayers-Kashmiri, of Carsdale Close, Reading, was going 66mph when he broke the 50mph speed limit on the M4 at Waltham St Lawrence near Twyford.

The 20-year-old was caught out on November 3, 2020.

He was fined £102 and given four points on his licence following a hearing at WMC on September 23.

Francis Smith, 53 from Moray Drive, Slough, was recorded at 57mph on the 50mph road on November 27, 2020.

The Slough man was also caught at Waltham St Lawrence and was fined £215 following a court hearing on September 15.

Appearing at WMC, he was also given three points on his licence.

Zileyh Shah, 43, of Park Corner, Windsor, broke the 50mph temporary speed limit at Waltham St Lawrence on December 1, 2020.

He was going 60mph.

Eight months later, on August 5, 2021, he was fined £66 and given three points on his licence following a sentencing at Oxford Magistrates’ Court.

And finally Louise Stables, of Ifould Crescent, Wokingham, was driving on the M4 in Bray when she was recorded ten mph over the temporary speed limit.

Appearing at WMC on August 31, the 42-year-old was handed a £300 fine and banned from driving for 56 days due to repeat offending.

The Wokingham woman was also give three points on her licence.
