For the next two weeks, we will be looking at what was going on in Bracknell back in 1990.
One of the light hearted stories from that year saw hundreds of people turn up at the St Catherine’s Church fete in the town, to part in the summer festivities.
Ice cream stalls, tombola’s and much more took place on this glorious summer day back in July 1990, which saw many people of all ages take part and enjoy the fun that was on show.
The summer of 1990 may have been one of the hottest in recent decades, but, for a group of teenagers decided to descend to one of Europe’s coldest countries.
Around 15 teenagers from the town travelled to the frozen fjords in Norway as part of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, the Troll Trek 90.
The youngsters were trained in different parts of the UK such as Dartmoor, Snowdonia and the Lake District before going to the north of Europe.
That same year saw also saw a unique and tear shedding moment in Binfield.
The Waymead Centre in the town received a specially-modified bath tub to help those who are disabled.
Presented by Cynthia and Graham Boyett, the couple presented the business with the unique bath after their daughter, Claire, who was a frequent user of the centre, died a year earlier in 1989.
The parents of Claire decided to raise funds so that the Waymead Centre could get the bath, as a thank you for helping their daughter.
During the same time, the Bracknell Nostalgia celebrated the weddings of two local couples from the area.
The two lucky and loved up couples were Neil McKay and Anne-Marie Hather, who were from Wokingham and Bracknell respectively.
The couple of married at the St Margaret Clitherow Church, with the newly weds spending their honeymoon in Greece.
The other couple was Michael Vizard and Tracey Anne Luther.
Mr Vizard originates from Yateley whilst Ms Luther hails from Crowthorne, and after their wedding at Conception Church in Sandhurst, the two flew to the USA for their honeymoon, and spent their inaugural days as a married couple in Florida.
That same year also saw several neighbours get together to try and fight developers from building on their land in Bracknell and during the same time, a man from the area was awarded a medal for 15 years of service with the Royal Navy.
Alan Hitchcock, who hailed from Binfield, joined the Navy in 1975.
The first year of the 1990s saw Steve Birch from Bracknell cycle 1,003 miles for Leukaemia Research, as he peddled from Lands End to John o’Groats.
The trek lasted around two weeks.
He said: “Because I know someone with Leukaemia, I have got involved over the years, and now, we have got into training and bought equipment for the training.”
Finally, around £7,000 was donated towards a ‘back to work’ initiative within the area, and for next week’s edition, we will be staying with 1990 to see what else was going on in the area.
