Eleven schools across Berkshire currently require improvement or are in special measures, according to Ofsted's records.

Inspectors from education watchdog Ofsted visit schools across England, and if a school is judged not to be providing an acceptable standard of education, it is placed in special measures – the most serious category.

Across Reading, Slough, Wokingham and West Berkshire, 11 schools are currently in special measures or requiring improvements. No schools in Bracknell Forest or Windsor and Maidenhead are in special measures at this time.

Here are the schools:

Reading

Radstock Primary School

Radstock Primary School was inspected in June 2018.

It was found that the "the quality of teaching across the school is not yet consistently good."

The inspectors did find, however, that “pupils behave well and attend school regularly. They are friendly and confident. The school is a calm and happy environment for learning".

We contacted Radstock Primary School for further comment.

A spokesman said: "We are still currently Requires Improvement but were inspected last week so should have a report by half term."

Christ The King Catholic Primary School

Christ The King Catholic Primary School visited by Ofsted back in October 2018 – with recommendations to improve the quality of teaching, learning as well as the consistency of teaching.

Inspectors did note how "the headteacher and his staff team are totally dedicated to the school. Their inclusive approach ensures that pupils are nurtured and cared for well."

John Madejski Academy

John Madejski Academy was visited by Ofsted in February 2020.

The report recognised the school had made improvements, however, "many pupils and parents agree that the school is better than in the past."

In a monitoring visit on September 2021, Ofsted recommendations included to move pupils to a full computing curriculum as soon as possible and to ensure that teachers identify more consistently the knowledge pupils have learned and what they need to learn next.

King's Academy Prospect

King's Academy Prospect was visited by Ofsted in April 2019 – with recommendations to improve the quality of teaching, learning as well as the consistency of teaching.

The report read: “Some teachers do not plan lessons carefully enough to provide either enough challenge for the most able or appropriate support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)."

We are waiting for an update from Kings Academy Prospect regarding their latest inspection.

Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School

Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School was visited for an inspection in May 2018 and shortcomings were found in several areas.

A report by education watchdog Ofsted recommended improvements in the quality of teaching, attendance levels and that the school should strengthen leadership at all levels.

The report said: "Skills in writing are not well enough developed. This is because pupils do not get enough chances to write longer pieces of work. "

We have approached Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School for further comment.

St John's Church of England Primary School

St John's Church of England Primary School was visited by Ofsted in January 2019.

Inspectors found that the school’s “inconsistencies in the quality of leadership and shortcomings in the quality of teaching, learning and assessment have caused standards to decline."

However, the report noted the school “offers a warm and nurturing environment."

Wokingham

Gorse Ride Junior School

Gorse Ride Junior School was visited by Ofsted in September 2018.

The report stated how "disadvantaged pupils achieve less well than their peers in reading, writing and mathematics. Furthermore, this group are falling even further behind in writing."

"The quality of teaching is variable", Ofsted inspectors added.

However, safeguarding is "effective. Leaders and governors hold a high degree of expertise in this aspect."

We have approached Gorse Ride Junior School for further comment.

Emmbrook Junior School

Emmbrook Junior School was visited by Ofsted in June 2018.

The report found that "leaders have not secured consistently good teaching. As a result, pupils’ outcomes, particularly in reading and writing, are too variable"

But "pupils are taught how to keep themselves safe, and are well cared for by staff."

Floreat Montague Park Primary School

Floreat Montague Park Primary School was found to have required improvements following a visit by Ofsted in July 2019.

It was found that the school’s "high staff turnover levels has affected the quality of provision and outcomes". 

The inspectors did find, however, that “children in the early years receive a good education."

Slough

Beechwood School

Beechwood School was visited by Ofsted in July 2019.

It was found that the "pupils’ literacy levels, especially in lower sets, remains weak."

However, "Parents are positive about the continued improvements within the school."
