Countless objections have been sent to Wokingham Borough Council to stop the redevelopment of the Pinewood centre in Crowthorne.

Residents have urged locals to email the authority with their views on the redevelopment due to take place in the ‘much loved’ community hub.

This follows a petition that has currently been signed by 3,886 people on Change.org to halt the future construction and ‘concreting’ of the site.

The centre was identified for redevelopment in the Wokingham Local Plan update which was approved by the council’s executive on Friday, November 12.

As it stands the Local Plan proposes to build 835 houses south of Waterloo Road, and north of Easthampstead Road and the inclusion of Pinewood site for "Self-funded regeneration".

The Pinewood Centre is a community facility located off Old Wokingham Road and is home to a number of different athletics and gym clubs, a miniature railway, a remote-control car speedway, and the Pinewood Starr boxing gym.

The Greys Farm is also a part of the Pinewood development and locals are worried about the relocation of the facilities.

A conservative flyer distributed to residents has claimed that after ‘speaking to residents on doorsteps’ the Local plan has been updated and that Pinewood Centre is ‘safe from the building of houses’.

The flyer states: “The recently produced local plan update review has suggested that a limited amount of housing could be built at pinewood. Your councillors have rejected this proposal.

“The intention of the proposed housing was to raise money to pay for the refurbishment or rebuilding of the existing facilities at the pinewood centre, some of which are in a poor state of repair.

“We have been speaking to residents on the doorstep and at our monthly surgeries and their message to us is clear. We will now seek funding from the Community Infrastructure Levy.”

Despite this declaration, members of the ‘Save Pinewood’ Facebook page remain sceptical about the outcome of the development.

An admin of the ‘Save Pinewood’ Facebook page said: “So sad it has taken a petition from 3000 people for local councillors to actually do their job and fight for their constituents. Shame they can’t admit this publicly. Also they have not protected the area yet. We will see what happens now.”
