A Bracknell care home has embraced a new approach to staying fit in partnership with a popular 80’s fitness queen.

Residents at Bickerton House have been taking part in Boxercise classes that have been adapted to be accessible for all abilities which removes the high intensity element but keeping the boxing movement.

This is part of Care UK’s ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative and aims to encourage residents to get up and active by trying something new.

Erika Smith, Home Manager at Bickerton House, said: “We had a fantastic time taking part in Boxercise here at Bickerton House.

“We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, which is why Boxercise seemed like the perfect activity.

“Boxercise is great for keeping fit, and especially for older people, as it improves motor skills, balance and reaction time, and engages hand-eye coordination.

“Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, Boxercise was a hit – we are looking forward continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, we may have Muhammad Ali in our midst!”

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees Care UK homes across the country encourage residents to move more by trying something new and exciting. This also includes activities such as seated ballet class, disco yoga and even ice dancing.

80’s fitness star, the Green Goddess has create a series of bespoke exercise videos for these activities. Residents and team members across the country are encouraged to don their best Lycra and neon accessories and take part in the fun new workouts.

“Regardless of age, keeping active is what keeps us young. Whether it’s walking a little further on your everyday stroll, or exercising a little longer, every day brings a new possibility. Even for those less mobile, chair-based exercises can be just as beneficial. Nothing should get in the way of you being the best version of you!”
