Residents of an Ascot street have been left divided after discussions have begun over the change of their road name's link to Prince Andrew.
Neighbours who live on Prince Andrew Way have taken to a neighbourhood app to gage resident’s responses on the potential switch to ditch the name.
The main organisers and campaigners feel that a fair debate regarding the subject is needed to determine what the right course of action should be.
Graeme Wellard, 33, said: “We’ve lived here for a year and the pride of saying that we now live in a lovely place like Ascot has been counteracted by the fact that we’re constantly tied to a name that has been dragged through the dirt.
“It affects us on a daily basis to be associated with the name and it’s embarrassing when we give out our address.”
The calls come over the road names link with the disgraced royal, who just weeks ago paid millions out of court to settle a civil sexual assault case with a woman he said he had never met.
However, John Clarke, who has lived on the road since 1965, has said a name change for the road would be necessary. He said: “It would be too expensive to change the name of the street now and I don’t think it is necessary. Having to change your address for everything would also be an inconvenience that we don’t need.”
Another resident who has lived on the road for 34 years said that she emphatically doesn’t want the street to change.
With differing opinions throughout the street, it is thought that it may cause friction between residents.
Grace, 30, said: "At first it may have been a bother but with all the hassle it would cause to change we’ve just resigned to it."
Organiser of discussions, Victoria Wagner and supporter Graeme's aim is to construct a letter to communicate their thoughts about the situation and to gain a more accurate understanding from residents of whether there is a consensus or not.
Neil Mathews, Assistant Director Highways and Transport, said: "At this stage the council has not been formally approached with this request.
"Changing a street name requires careful consideration and the involvement of all those affected. We can provide further advice to residents should they contact us."
