Local elections are set to take place next month for many councils, with Wokingham Borough preparing for a third of its seats going to the polls.

Wokingham Borough Council has a population of more than 170,000 and covers areas including Finchampstead, Sonning and Twyford.

Of its 54 seats, 31 are currently held by the Conservatives, 18 by the Liberal Democrats, two by Labour, two by Independent Group and one by an independent councillors – with 18 seats being voted on this year.

According to its 2022/23 financial plan, the council expects its total expenditure to exceed £144M, with £1M coming from council tax.

The council’s budget pays for day-to-day services such as adult social care, children’s services, waste and recycling, planning, transport, highways, street cleaning, parks, playgrounds, libraries and environmental health.

In its financial plan, the council is proposing, amongst other things, no cuts to services, continued investment in Children’s Services and Adult Social Care and a Council tax rise of 1.99 per cent.

Funding comes from a variety of sources including from central government grants, other grants for specific purposes such as infrastructure, fees and charges like car parking, as well as from borrowing, investments, business rates and your council tax.
