Shops stocking certain Kinder chocolate products are being urged to remove them immediately due to the presence of Salmonella.

Following a national product recall of selected items at the start of April, further investigation has found that some smaller retailers may not have removed them from sale.

This has caused a number of young children to become seriously ill and many reported cases have been admitted to hospital.

The possible symptoms of a Salmonella infection are vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, headache and abdominal cramps.

Point-of-sale notices, which were previously issued to explain why items were recalled and what to do if you have bought the product, have been removed in many cases.

The affected products are:

Kinder Surprise (20g): All dates up to and including 4 January, 2023

Kinder Surprise (20g x 3 pack): All dates up to and including 4 January, 2023

Kinder Surprise (100g): All dates up to and including 21 August, 2022

Kinder Mini Eggs (75g): All dates up to and including 21 August, 2022

Kinder Egg Hunt Kit (150g): All dates up to and including 21 August, 2022

Kinder Schokobons (70g, 200g and 320g): All dates up to and including 4 January, 2023

If customers have bought one of these products, it is essential that they do not eat it. Instead, contact the Ferrero consumer careline to receive a full refund.

It comes as local council's are warning outlets to see if they stock any of these products and to act urgently.

Marcus Herbert, commercial services manager at Wokingham Borough Council, said: “We cannot stress enough how important it is for retailers to check if they have these products and to display the point-of-sale notices.

“This is a very serious outbreak. Some of the children who have previously eaten the affected items have become very ill and we would ask shops to check their stocks of these products and remove any affected items to ensure customers are not being put at risk.”

The previous recall only covered some of the affected products and so it is vital shops remove all of the additional items. The updated recall includes all Kinder products manufactured at the Arlon site in Belgium.

Tina Potter, head of incidents for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), said: “Feedback from initial visits confirms that recalled product remains on sale at some retailers. Where possible, Ferrero is purchasing the product to discard it.

“We have requested that Ferrero notifies the FSA and the relevant local authorities of the stores where it finds product on shelves, so that local authorities are aware and can make direct contact with the retail stores that have been found to not comply with the product recall and withdrawal.”
