The attempted burglary happened at 2.45am when the resident heard a noise.
They looked out of the window and saw torchlight and two figures standing outside.
Police said the resident found the back door open but luckily no-one was inside the property.
The resident then ran outside and saw a black hybrid Porsche driving away.
Thames Valley Police said: "You do not go down and confront an intruder, or put yourself at risk.
"If you hear someone in the house – what do you do? You do not go down with a baseball bat! You turn the lights on, turn up a radio loud, put a chair under the door handle and lock the door – shout for someone to release the Alsatian and dial the police on 999 and explain there is a possible burglary in progress."
They said confronting an intruder could put yourself at risk so it is better to call the police straight away.
If you live in the vicinity of any of the crimes mentioned and have CCTV or a video doorbell, contact police on 101 quoting reference number 3220208262.
