A 48-year-old man must pay almost £1,000 after driving while using his mobile phone on the motorway.

Christopher Wakemen, of The Avenue, Crowthorne, was caught using the handheld device while driving a black BMW on Junction 11 to 12 of the M6, Cannock, on December 9, 2021.

At Cannock Magistrates Court on May 26, 2022, Wakemen was fined £753 and ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £75.

He must pay £90 in costs and the judge endorsed six points on his driving licence.

Wakemen, who pleaded guilty, has until June 23 to pay the amount, £918, in full.

It’s illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send or receive data, while driving or riding a motorcycle.

This means a driver must not use a device in their hand for any reason, whether online or offline.
