Recently, we welcomed over 80 Ukrainian guests to a community event at Time Square, the council’s office building. It was fantastic that so many Ukrainians were able to attend.
The event was open to those on the Homes for Ukraine and Ukraine Family Visa schemes. Those that attended the event had the opportunity to speak with local support services and organisations, accessing advice and guidance on topics including school admissions, National Insurance, adult English courses, jobs and benefits. However, our main goal was to offer a safe space for Ukrainians to meet other Ukrainians, make new connections and grow that important social support network. This is crucial in helping our new arrivals settle into the borough and feel part of our community.
We hope to offer similar opportunities in the future. There are local charities and churches already holding regular coffee mornings for Ukrainians to be able to meet with others in a safe and welcoming space, which is great to see. As always, I am so humbled by the positive response of our residents, businesses and partners.
With temperatures starting to increase, summer is finally here. The level three heatwave we experienced at the end of last week was a reminder of how important it is to look after ourselves and those around us. Some people, particularly the elderly, young children and those with long term health conditions, are at greater risk in the heat. Please do remember to drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and try to avoid the sun between 11am – 3pm if you are able to.
In our borough we have beautiful open spaces to enjoy on sunny days. As tempting as it is to go for a swim in open water, please be aware of the dangers and be sensible when swimming, as it is easy to get into difficulty.
I hope you have a chance to explore some of the wonderful outdoor spaces we have to offer in Bracknell Forest. Take care and have a good week.
