Bracknell Town Centre has gone through many changes over the last ten years. From the removal of the bandstand to the gradual regeneration of The Lexicon and Princess Square.

The goal being to create a town that provides services and amenities that will serve everyone in the community.

Whether it is an important landmark that has been removed to make way for more modern structures or a service yet to be created, there will always be something that we feel that is missing.

The News asked readers what they thought Bracknell was missing. This caused much debate and intrigue about many things that we could see for the future of Bracknell.

Interestingly, some readers pointed out certain town landmarks that have been taken away to make way for more modern structures or town regeneration projects.

When it came to the decision to remove the bandstand from Bracknell Town Centre, it received a lot of push back from residents. All these years later, readers reminisce over the memories that were made in this spot that is now missing from the town.

The question remains…will they build a new one or leave residents guessing.

Terry Williams also referenced the old clock fountain where ‘kids would love to go during the hot weather’. This was a mystery online as to where the old fountain went or if it’s still secretly hidden amongst the old buildings.

One aspect of the town centre that a lot of readers think that the town is in desperate need of is a good old fashioned indoor market with local produce and independent stores.

Lady–Tracy Davies Holder, who after 35 years came for a visit recently said: “I haven’t lived in Bracknell for 35 years but when I went back when the lexicon opened the soul had gone out of the town.

“It needs a proper market, a fresh fish shop, independent stores with affordable rent.”

Due to the use of the internet and social media, many towns have neglected the small details that were once the norm in small towns such as Bracknell. This includes a community notice board outlining the various activities going on in the town.

Another reader has suggested that the empty shop units within Princess Square should be used to hold small independent market stalls and pop-up shops.

The Lexicon has been using the various different empty shop units to hold seasonal events and activity stations, so maybe pop-up shops are only a stones throw away. We shall have to wait and see!

Sadly, many believe that although the regeneration of the town centre has brought with it better stores, decent coffee shops and lots of places to eat, it also has lost its personality over the years as the new town centre is built up.

It shall be interesting to look back in many years and see if anything that we thought was missing from the town in 2022 actually made it and what we think is still missing.
