Roughly three in every four people are considering not putting their heating on this winter, a poll of Bracknell residents has revealed.
Facebook group We Love Bracknell conducted an online poll, which received 1,245 votes, and found that an overwhelming majority of respondents are ‘seriously considering’ going without heating over the coming months.
“What a sad state of affairs we have come to in this country. We are meant to be a well-off nation compared to others and look at where we are,” one resident replied.
Another, who works in social housing, said they are “genuinely worried” for many of the tenants.

“My heart breaks when they tell me they’re worried they won’t make it through the winter. Something has to be done,” they added.
Even some of those who responded ‘no’ did so because they either have elderly relatives to look after so, therefore, have to or are prepared to “deal with” the consequences further down the line.
The poll was conducted on September 2, before the election of Liz Truss as the next Prime Minister and ahead of yesterday’s announcement to freeze the energy price cap, which may change some minds.
Ms Truss outlined measure that will fix the cap on household energy bills at £2,500 a year until 2024, beginning on October 1 .
