A 53-year old Windsor parent has decided to take the plunge this year into the straits of Corfu for a local Autism charity.

On Saturday, September 17, Rory Smyth, whose daughter is supported by Autism at Kingwood will be completing a 3.5km fundraising swim on behalf of the Earley based charity.

The challenge is organised by Albania Overboard, an initiative that was established 8 years ago to help raise awareness and funds for carefully selected local charities. They have chosen a target of £5,000.

Rory says: “I’m swimming to raise funds for Autism at Kingwood whose staff play such a key role in Charlotte’s day-to-day supported living. They are patient, kind and compassionate, and do amazing work for many people throughout Berks, Bucks and Oxon.

“I really appreciate the service and staff care Kingwood provide. Please help me to raise as much as possible to help!”

Mr Smyth chose to swim between Corfu and Albania to support the charity as the providers of support for his daughter. So far, they have raised £1,800 with many people supporting the cause.

He added: “As a family we are very fortunate to have Kingwood who help with their wonderful specialist staff to care for our daughter Charlotte.

“Autism at Kingwood is a registered charity and social care provider, which provides supported living, to over 150 autistic people and people with Asperger Syndrome, helping them to live successfully in their own homes.”

"The funds will help Autism at Kingwood continue our vital work, enabling autistic people to live a successful and good life."

Albania Overboard that have organised the swim between coasts was founded by Nick Lemis and Nick Cookson, two UK based friends with strong family ties in Corfu. Keen to support local environmental initiatives and a children’s charity close to their hearts.

They have said that they are extremely grateful for the incredible commitment of the swimmers and invaluable support from friends, donors and locals on both sides of the Albania Corfu channel who make it happen.
