London’s newest tube line, the Elizabeth Line has reached the end of its journey to completion today (6/11).

As the final phase is officially opened, commuters will be able to enjoy a seamless connection from central London to Reading without the need to change trains.

The £19 billion train line stretches from Reading in Berkshire and Heathrow Airport in West London to Abbey Wood in south-east London and Shenfield in Essex.

Central London stations include Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf.

Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner, said: “The new direct routes, which now include central London to Heathrow, will connect people jobs, homes, leisure and international travel, and drive the city’s economic recovery.”

"The final timetable, bringing full end-to-end journeys and up to 24 trains per hour, is expected to be introduced by May next year.

"The project to build the Elizabeth line suffered numerous issues including construction difficulties and complications installing signalling systems.

"Crossrail was due to be completed in December 2018 and was set a budget of £14.8 billion in 2010."

Reading’s Economy & Destination Agency has said that with journey times of just over an hour, the new Elizabeth Line completion will provide perfect opportunities for visitors to experience the beauty of Berkshire during a family day out.

The new service is also thought to attract new businesses to Reading, offering easy access to the city.

Companies such as Microsoft, Bayer and PepsiCo have relocated their offices to Reading and will now benefit from the excellent transport link.

Nigel Horton-Baker, Chief Executive of REDA, said: “The completion of the final phase of the Elizabeth Line project is a great achievement and is part of Reading’s 2050 Vision to become a smart and sustainable city of the future.

"The seamless transport link will bolster Reading’s position as a major commercial destination connected to the UK’s capital and global financial centres, as well as an exciting place to visit thanks to the short travel times and easy access via the Elizabeth Line.“

Journey times from central London to Reading are expected to run every 3 - 5 minutes at peak times.

Fares are in line with Transport for London's fare structures with off-peak adult singles at £13.80/ day returns at £27.70. Any Londoner with a Freedom Pass will be able to use their pass to travel free of charge to Reading, making Reading a great choice of a cheap day out from the Capital.
