Frustrated homeowners have hit back against a broadband provider after they were forced out of their driveways by unplanned works.

The inconvenience began on the Sunningdale cul-de-sac, Dale Close, when residents woke up to contractors invading their street with no warning.

According to locals, this lack of communication caused havoc for multiple houses meaning around 16 cars were forced elsewhere as the new concrete was laid.

One angry resident, who does not wish to be named explained: “The contractors turned up with absolutely no warning where they proceeded to dig up the footpath on one side of the cul-de-sac.

“Everyone was told that we wouldn’t be able to use our driveways because they had to put concrete down and they didn’t want us to drive our cars over the surface.

“It went on for a week and the whole close was inaccessible.”

Without prior notice, arrangements were unable to be made for residents that required additional needs.

The News understands that this included a neighbour who required the use of a charging point in their driveway for an electric car. Without this, other accomodations and more expensive arrangements had to be made.

Swish Fibre have said that they regurally send out letters when they indeed to start work across communities.

Residents stated that they received a notice in March from Swish Fibre however no road works were conducted at that time. The adjacent set of houses on the cul-de-sac have received letters about upcoming works on their road.

The Sunningdale resident added: “Everyone has been affected. I think it’s more that we’re just upset and annoyed that we weren’t told that they were coming, and they just turned up and suddenly you are barricaded out.

“Technically our cars were out of sight and if anything happened to any of them, we wouldn’t be able to claim on our insurance because we insist that they’re in the driveway.

“So, if someone had a break in or someone smashed into a car, we wouldn’t have a leg to stand on because it should have been in the drive as to our insurance policies.

“It would be nice if they got back to us with a reasonable response and a little bit of compensation for the inconvenience.”

Swish Fibre spokesperson said: As part of the Governments continuing commitment to support the roll-out of Gigabit broadband across the UK, Swish Fibre are investing millions of pounds into Ascot to provide residents and businesses with access to our state-of-the-art full fibre broadband network which will be hugely beneficial and transformative for the community.

"Swish Fibre have a number of orders pending in Ascot which includes Dale Close.

“Due to an isolated complaint, the knock-on effect has meant we are now in an unfortunate situation where some residents will have their service delayed.

“We want to apologise again to them for the disappointment and reassure them that we’ll get them up and running asap.

Swish Fibre added: “In our many communications to residents we make a point to refer people to our website for the latest build updates as permit changes can occur.

“This may also mean that there can be quick turnarounds in construction and Swish is no different to any other provider in this regard. Our team have been to visit several residents in Dale Close this week to explain the current situation.”
