Patients and staff at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Children’s Clinic have been chosen as charity of the season to receive their very own Snow Window creation this Christmas.
Tom Baker, a father of two from Sandhurst has gone from strength to strength over the last eight years after deciding to turn a Christmas surprise for his wife into a thriving business.
This year’s creation, which he has designed for the children in Royal Berks, is inspired by the quintessentially British children’s book icon, Paddington bear.
Tom explained: “I started these paintings in my home and for friends and family at first and then decided to start Snow Windows.
“I wasn’t sure if it would work, as I had no experience, but I've always been creative and we decided to just go for it.
“Creating this year’s window for Royal Berkshire Hospital has been brilliant. The girl’s wanted Paddington which is very popular at Christmas and then I just added a Christmas back drop.”
The work that goes into these fantastic designs includes spraying on specialist snow paint in layers and then using a scrapping tool to create details and intricate patterns on the glass.
This involves working very quickly to make sure that the paint doesn’t dry before it is shaped into its desired effect.
The Royal Berkshire Hospital Children’s Clinic has been turned into a Winter Wonderland this year as local artist and owner of Snow Windows, Tom, creates one of his intricate seasonal window designs.
Although the Sandhurst family man has attracted attention from all over the world, he admits to having no artistic training.
Five months after the family opened the business they were fully booked and receiving enquiries from as far afield as the Empire State Building.
Over the year’s Tom has garnered a list of celebrity client including Jamie Oliver, Chris Moyles and Mike Tindell. National business that have also enquired over the years are Harvey Nichols and Audi.
The nurses and play staff from the paediatric department were excited to join Tom in the playroom within the Dolphin Ward this morning (8/11).
The window design took less than two hours to complete with only one can of paint used for the three window designs.
Paddington was used as the main image in the middle pane of glass, surrounded by a winter backdrop on surrounding windows
