In this week's column, the last of 2022, Paul Bettison OBE, the leader of Bracknell Forest Council, reflects on a year when the council focused on the most vulnerable people in society. Councillor Bettison writes:
This year has certainly flown by! It is incredible to think that there are just a few days left of 2022. This period of time between Christmas and New Year’s Day, is the perfect opportunity to reflect on some of the things that we have accomplished and experienced this year in our wonderful borough.
Storm Eunice swept across the country in February. A number of our teams worked together to quickly deal with the aftermath, helping to make our borough safe for residents. March showed us the compassion and generosity of spirit of many of our residents, local charities and businesses, when the invasion of Ukraine led to many Ukrainian nationals looking for homes and support in the UK. Over the course of this year, I have had several opportunities to meet with our hosts and guests, as well as attend the opening of the fantastic Ukrainian community hub, Vsi Razom, in Princess Square. In times of need, our borough comes together admirably to support those most vulnerable.
At the beginning of summer, Bracknell Forest came alive with celebrations for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Council staff, volunteers and local partners all worked together tirelessly to deliver a fantastic programme of events for everyone in the borough. Little did we know at the time, that a few months later, we would be holding very different events to mark The Queen’s life and reign. In September, we reflected fondly on the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II after her passing. As part of Operation London Bridge, many teams in the council and local organisations worked in partnership to carry out some very specific tasks and events at set times, from the moment of her death until the end of the national period of mourning. A moment in history that will not be forgotten, both here and across the world.
As the year moved from late summer to autumn and winter, we looked once again to support those most vulnerable. Dedicated community winter hubs opened, and support has been extended to help those most affected by the increased cost of living.
I hope that during this time before the New Year, we are all able to take time to reset and replenish our energy. I hope that you have all enjoyed some time with loved ones and have been able to celebrate in your own way.
Wishing you a very happy and healthy 2023.
