Concerns have been raised by neighbours throughout Wokingham about the safety of their main roads after two fatal accidents in a period of six months.
Reading Road is the main stretch of infrastructure that connects commuters from Wokingham to the Showcase Cinema in Woodley.
After two deaths in the last year and a multitude of accidents, fears have come to ahead over whether measures need to be put in place.
The latest accident on the stetch of road occurred on May 15 at 11:45am following a collision between a pedestrian and a black Vauxhall Corsa.
Following an appeal for witnesses on social media, residents came forward to express their sadness and comment on the need for extra precautions for most pedestrians and vehicles.
One reader said: “This road needs pedestrian crossings with lights, standing in the middle at the current crossing points is not nice when you have traffic passing both sides of you. Sad times for all concerned.”
Many people who live near this main road have said that traffic is often moving at a speed that would often be deemed too fast for the, particularly due to the number of houses and side streets.
According to a neighbour, a local Speedwatch group has been set up to operate in the Wokingham area.
Another reader and Wokingham neighbour said: “There is supposed to be a Speedwatch group operating there, and I know they have done at least one session as we tagged the same car. We do the east side of Woky but the more we do it, the better I guess.”
Other however do not feel that a community Speedwatch will change any behaviour within this patch.
Michael Smith added: “Unless it’s the police it doesn’t really count, I guess someone will need to be killed or seriously injured for it to be perceived as an issue.”
