There are no plans to close or sell off Bracknell Leisure Centre, the council has said – as councillors prepared to discuss its future.

Members of Bracknell Forest Council’s Executive Committee – the leading body of councillors – were set to discuss the refurbishment of the leisure centre at a meeting on Tuesday, June 20.

But the discussions will take place behind closed doors, under rules that allow councillors to withhold information relating to financial or business affairs. There was some speculation on social media that plans included selling or demolishing the centre to housing developers.

In a statement released on Monday, the council said: “There are three options available to the Executive, all of which look at improving various parts of the leisure centre which were untouched by the regeneration work in 2018.

“None of the options include selling off the centre or redeveloping it into housing or for other uses.

“While transparency is extremely important, there are times when detailed financial information cannot be shared.”

If the executive agrees the plans, they will be discussed at a full council meeting on Wednesday, July 12, with a set of public papers. But at least some information will still be kept private in a confidential annexe to the documents.
