A Bracknell secondary school has been slammed by parents for ‘abusing health and safety responsibilities’ after pupils are forced to wear their blazers in scorching temperatures.
A furious grandparent, Keith Harvey, contacted the Bracknell News to complain about the ‘blazer rule’ that he described is like ‘living in an army camp’.
As the temperatures rise to a stifling 30 degrees this week, Brackenhale school has said that policies regarding uniforms have been communicated to parents.
Keith told the Chronicle: “For some unknown reason they have enforced these ridiculous rules where the kids are forced to wear their school blazers in this heat.
“This is heading for a catastrophe. From a health and safety point of view, my grandson is overheating which is causing him anxiety during his first week at school.
“My daughter has been in touch with parents from other schools in the area and they have said that their children have been allowed to wear their school PE kit during these temperatures, so I don’t understand why Brackenhale is any different.”
According to parents, detentions are given out for those who do not adhere to the uniform rules which then results in additional time spent sitting in the ‘boiling classrooms’.
Keith added: “It’s only a matter of time before something happens to one of the students, but I hope common sense prevails before anything happens.
“Overheating or dehydration is a very real possibility.”
A spokesperson from Brackenhale School commented: "The policy regarding uniform and the wearing of blazers in hot weather has been communicated directly to all parents/carers. Any parent/carer with a specific concern regarding their child should contact the school directly."
