Silva Homes tenants say delayed repairs have left them with leaky ceilings, freezing homes, and without a shower.

Two separate people have come forward with new complaints after one tenant, Jonathan Godsell, said he’d had to build his own shower in his yard amid a dispute with the housing association.

Martin Lewis says he spent “nearly three Christmases with a freezing cold flat” – and has had a hole in his bathroom ceiling since April. Meanwhile, 81-year-old Rose Chanel has reported spending six weeks unable to use her shower due to a blocked drain.

Ms Chanel says she complained that her wet room wasn’t draining properly at her home on The Croft in Priestwood – leaving slippery shampoo and shower gel residue on the floor.

She says Silva Homes passed the repairs to a contractor who told her it may not get fixed until October 6 – despite the fact she reported the problem on August 21.

She said: “I said this floor is dangerous for me. If I went into it with all this water and shampoo I could fall. They didn’t seem that bothered.”

In a separate complaint, Mr Lewis, 38, of Naseby, Birch Hill, has lived in a cold flat since 2020 – and to top it all has suffered leaks in his bathroom since January, according to his friend.

Gareth Morley has helped Mr Lewis – who has learning disabilities – seek help from Silva Homes.

Mr Morley said: “He spent nearly three Christmases with a freezing cold flat.”

He said that even after storage heaters in the flat were replaced this year, they still don’t seem to give off much heat – yet Mr Lewis’s electric bill can still come up to £400 a month.

Mr Morley also said that Mr Lewis has had three leaks in his bathroom ceiling in January, April and September this year – leaving a hole in the ceiling yet to be repaired. He also said leaks occur during heavy rain.

A repair worker came to inspect the roof and promised to replace the guttering shortly after Bracknell News contacted Silva Homes for comment.

A Silva Homes spokesperson said: “We’re working as quickly as possible to resolve the leak in the property and are sorry for the inconvenience and upset this has caused.”

Silva Homes added it had contacted Mr Lewis to understand if he had further heating issues, and to offer support with his bills.

Silva Homes also sent someone to take Ms Chanel for a shower, shortly after being contacted by Bracknell News. They said contractors would fix the drainage problems at her house this week.

The spokesperson said: “The health and safety of our customers is our highest priority. We’re working as quickly as possible to resolve the drainage issue in the customer’s property and are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.

“We have provided the customer with alternative washing facilities so that they can continue to shower as the work is completed.”
