Two roads have been spared from having new double yellow lines imposed on them after residents wrote in to object.

Parking restrictions were approved across Wokingham borough on Thursday, January 18. Council highways officers considered new restrictions at some 60 roads after receiving requests from residents and councillors.

But they decided to drop plans for double yellow lines on Colemans Moor Road in Woodley. And they decided to install single yellow lines on a section of London Road in Bulmershe and Whitegates rather than double yellow lines.

This is after 22 and 30 people objected to those schemes respectively. Residents of Colemans Moor Road said they thought the double yellow lines would only push parking further down the road – and make parking harder for those living in maisonettes with no driveways.

Some feared drivers would be more tempted to speed down the road if there were no cars parked on the kerbside. One resident said: “Cars often speed down this road and along Bader Way. Introducing double yellow lines would clear the road and encourage more of this dangerous behaviour.”

Matt Gould, Wokingham Borough Council’s head of network management and transport planning, said highways officers would ‘reconsider options.’

Meanwhile a resident of London Road said the original proposal for double yellow lines on London Road was “unfair for residents just because some people have caused a nuisance.”

Their comment said: “We all have large and small family/friends get togethers where we are very considerate in parking on the roadsides.

“Never have the neighbours or myself caused a problem or an obstruction to other road traffic users. If the proposal goes ahead this will affect most households of enjoying a peaceful, quiet leisure time.”

Mr Gould presented the plans to councillor Paul Fishwick, who is responsible for roads.

Mr Gould asked councillor Fishwick to approve the full list, along with the change to single yellow lines on London Road and the withdrawal of plans for Colemans Moor Road.

Councillor Fishwick said he agreed. The new restrictions will be rolled out from Thursday, January 25, after a five working day ‘cooling off period.
