Locals of Bracknell have been remembering a beloved past sports team.
The Thames Valley Tigers was a professional basketball team that competed in the British Basketball League until 2005.
Formerly known as the Pirates, the team moved to Bracknell in 1982 before joining the league in 1987.
They won the first silverware in 1988–89 before becoming the Thames Valley Tigers.
In a recent post to social media, dozens of people have been sharing their memories of watching the prestigious team play.
John Wild shared a photograph of the team with “Bracknell’s finest Thames Valley Tigers 1998. Lots of good memories watching them.”
One user commented “Used to love going to watch the Tigers and the Bracknell Pirates before that” with another person asking “Did they not win the championships that year?”
The senior men’s team were the BBL league champions in 1993, the runners-up in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1999, and the national cup winners in 1988 and 1997.
A further person said “I started watching the team when they were the Bracknell Pirates. They had Sam Stiller as Point Guard and Ronaldo Lawerence (powerhouse!), and Peter Scantlebury.”
“As the Bracknell Bees started I never went back to basketball, but remember fondly the atmosphere in the Sports Centre!”
