Do you have many memories of Bracknell 10 years ago? Locals have been looking back at the town before it was rejuvenated.
Lorna Gilbert recently posted two photographs to social media of Bracknell town centre a decade ago in the snow.
Along with the pictures she also wrote “These came up on my memories today from 10 years ago. Bracknell before the regeneration. Look at the old town.”
Dozens of local residents commented on the photographs and shared their memories of the “old town.”
A good deal of users said that they missed the old shops and other establishments that once adorned Bracknell’s streets.
One person said “Much better back then,” with another person saying “I do love the new town but I wish they had mixed the old and new. All the spirit has gone.”
A further user compared the old town centre to The Lexicon. They said “As far as I'm concerned the Lexicon is identical to the town in the 1960s Vibe wise. The Lexicon is nice, but so was the town in the 1960s.
“They are both Modern builds. I would say components of the old town were much better than what we have today. Charles square is certainly a good example of some of those components.
“It would have been nice if the Lexicon implemented more of those components, it would make the town centre a lot more unique while also being a more attractive town.”
However, many users expressed that they think the town is in far better shape now.
One user said “Quite often people, not just old people, but people of all ages, yearn to the past, believing it was a better time.
“They think and feel that their childhood, adolescence, and the time they were young was a great time. A great number of people think and believe that everything was better in the past than it is now.
“This is also true of places. People often say that a place was better in the past but give no reason. I remember Bracknell town as windy with incredibly ugly shops and buildings.
“It was declining. Yes I can pick out individual shops or restaurants that I liked but to suggest it was better then. Nah.”
In agreement with the previous comment, another user said “The only decent shop was bentalls which would have been great if they reopened in the new town but apart from lack of more bars it’s now a decent place to shop and eat and vastly better than the old town.”
