A long-delayed major town centre housing development could finally be completed by the end of this year, it has been announced.
Some 55 homes were supposed to have been ready for people to move in during September last year as part of initial council plans to redevelop Carnival Hub on Wellington road in Wokingham.
But construction ground to a halt when the company building the flats – The Mid Group – went into administration in 2022. But now Wokingham Borough Council says a new contractor has been brought in, and expects to finish the job by late 2024 or early 2025.
Sarah Morgan, the council’s assistant director of commercial property, said: “The contractor that we had constructing those flats Mid Group went into administration.
“We now are working with Osborne’s, a different contractor, to finish that building – they are now on site.
“We expect that project and those properties to be completed by the end of this year, very beginning of next year.”
She said that the building is ‘over 50 per cent complete’, adding, ‘we need to get that completed as soon as possible.’
The update came at a committee meeting of councillors on Wednesday, February 28.
Councillor Charles Margetts asked if the council would earn money back on the building. Sarah Morgan said the development would ‘pay back the cost of constructing it.’
