An exciting new musical famed for providing audiences with highly complex themes will be coming to the stage within the next few months.
EBOS dramatic theatre society returns with the Broadway classic 'Gypsy: A Musical Fable' which will run from the Wilde Theatre May 7 to May 11.
Set in the 1920s, Gypsy tells the story of “Mama” Rose, as she strives to lead her daughters to stardom.
The performance is set against the backdrop of vaudeville, burlesque and a country close to the brink of depression.
It follows the dreams and struggles of Rose to raise her two daughters June and Louise from young girls to women as they perform onstage up and down the country.
The show is based on the autobiography 'Gypsy: Memoirs of America’s Most Celebrated Stripper' published by Rose’s real life daughter Louise.
'Gypsy: A Musical Fable' is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of the mid-twentieth century's conventional musical theatre.
It is to this day still referred to as one of the greatest American musical of all time and Mama Rose is considered one of the few truly complex characters musical theatre has to offer.
A spokesperson for EBOS said "This is incredibly personal and intimate story that delivers on an epic scale containing numerous songs that became popular standards, including Everything's Coming Up Roses, Together (Wherever We Go), Let Me Entertain You, All I Need is the Girl, Rose's Turn and the showstopping You Gotta Get a Gimmick."
EBOS is one of the leading amateur dramatic and musical theatre societies in Berkshire.
Founded in 1952 as East Berkshire Operatic Society, the society continues to produce award winning pieces of musical theatre and drama.
Pinewood Theatre is the focal hub of the Society. As well as being their theatre, it is also their rehearsal space and is used for a variety of social activities during the year.
As well as being a place for budding performers, they also have their own workshop and properties store and we are always on the lookout for new members for the technical crew.
These often unsung heroes provide EBOS with incredible sets, fantastic sound and lighting for the productions and wonderful stage management.
In addition, EBOS has an extensive wardrobe and the wardrobe team welcome anyone interested in designing and creating costumes for our shows. Costumes can also be hired for other shows or fancy dress events.
