A high street restaurant’s plans to host all-day drinking and music during Royal Ascot could be blocked over noise fears.

The Vall de Cavall tapas bar on Hermitage Parade on High Street in Ascot wants to sell alcohol and put on entertainment for up to 500 people at a time during the horse racing festival in June.

But council environmental protection officials have raised concerns that the event would cause too much noise for the residents of nearby flats. They say they have already had ‘numerous complaints’ about noise during Royal Ascot in previous years.

Vall de Cavall owner Sandra Da Costa wants to sell alcohol and host entertainment at the bar from 10am-10pm between June 18 and June 22.

Details submitted to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead say entertainment will include a DJ between 4pm and 10pm, and no more than 500 people will be allowed in at any one time.

Ms Da Costa has submitted a temporary event notice to the council’s licensing department. This allows venues to host activities that they would normally need a license for without having to get authorisation from the council.

But police and council environmental health officers can intervene to impose restrictions or stop events going ahead.

The Royal Borough’s environmental protection team say it is ‘unlikely we will be happy’ to allow an event at Vall de Cavall during Royal Ascot. They told the licensing department they have had noise complaints during Royal Ascot from High Street residents in previous years.

They said: “The premises are surrounded by residential premises (mainly in flats above the commercial units). We historically have numerous complaints, particularly during Ascot week, about loud music.

“Last year, environmental protection officers visited the High Street and were of the opinion that statutory nuisance was likely to be occurring and affecting the enjoyment of local residents’ properties.”

They added: “It is very unlikely that we will be happy to accept a similar application in Ascot.”

Vall de Cavall normally opens from 12noon-1am Mondays to Thursdays and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. Its website shows it is already taking restaurant bookings for dining between 11am and 10pm during Royal Ascot week.

Councillors on the Royal Borough’s licensing sub committee are set to hold a hearing on Thursday May 23 to decide whether to allow the event.

The restaurant owner and environmental protection officers will each have the chance to make their case. The councillors will then have to announce their decision by May 31.
