Following the news of the closure of one of Wokingham’s most well known town centre pub, residents across the town have shown mixed emotions.

The Gig House, located on The Plaza on Denmark Street has served punters within the town for nearly 20 years.

Previously a Wetherspoons until 2018, the pub has been privately owned since Wetherspoons pulled out of the town.

After challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic to the increasing cost of living, the owner has decided to close for good.

For people who remember this boozer with memories good and bad throughout the years, they have missed the place a fond farewell.

Phil Warner said: “A beacon of hope for me and my mates the last couple of years with our little ones, we could have a pint and they could play in the soft play. Everyone was happy … alas…..”

Cheri Head added: “It's a shame. Gig house is a great club, where many people go and socialise. Great memories at spin bar and gig house.”

Florence Molloy who remembers her time at the local pub has said that she is “gutted” to hear the news that was released on Tuesday (12/6).

Despite this however, some readers have said that they are not surprised about the bars closing all these years later.

Michelle Smith explained: “Was a great pub when wetherspoons ran it. We went in there last year and were shocked by how expensive and terrible it was! Not surprised it's closing.”

Reader, Andrew Palmer told the News: “I thought it closed months ago, tried going in a few times in the early evening and it was never open.

“[It’s] gone downhill since Spoons left. Lovely little taproom opposite to have a decent beer instead.”
