A busy coffee shop was forced to close last weekend – with only a few days notice – after owners were unable to meet demands on rising rates and rent costs.
On Wednesday, June 12, the manager of Coffee Barker – Manj Kaur – received a shocking phone call with the news that her 10 hardworking employees would be made jobless.
This comes as business rates across the town have seen an increase, with no help from either the council or their landlords.
Manj explained: “We were all so shocked especially because we didn’t get much notice. The owners tried everything to negotiate with the landlords but in the end, nothing could be agreed on and they had to close.
“The rates are so high that there won’t be any shops left unless The Lexicon gives businesses some help.
“The town’s not busy enough during the week and even during the weekend, people are choosing to eat at these new cafes and restaurants instead of supporting the businesses that have been in the town for years.”
Over the last two years, the restaurants that have opened in the shopping complex includes, The Lounge, Five Guys, Giggling Squid, Doner Kebab and many more.
The Coffee Barker manager has expressed her sadness and disappointment after five and a half years with the business.
According to Café Barker, business rates in the Lexicon have gone as high as £100,000 a year, making it near impossible for small/independent shops to survive in The Lexicon.
Alongside a rent increase, many shops and restaurants may end up heading in the same direction as the coffee shop.
She added: “There are so many businesses in the Lexicon that are closing for the exact same reason and it’s just heartbreaking.
“The footfall had been decreasing but we still had our loyal customers. It’s sad to see everything go but we need to move on and keep going.”
The café, which is known for it’s delicious hot and cold drinks, snacks and gorgeous cocktails, was opened in 2017 following the success of the chain's original coffee shop in Cardiff.
It has been a popular destination throughout the years for shoppers wishing to drop in for a bite to eat or a relaxing drink.
