A disgruntled resident has quoted a Hollywood film in his complaint to Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) over their new provision of wheelie bins.
WBC are changing their waste management collection across the borough by supplying each household with a wheelie bin and changing general waste collection to once a fortnight. Recycling will be collected the other week. The changes are set to come into force on August 12.
Peter Humphreys is set to appear at a full council meeting of the on Thursday, July 25 to ask a question to the executive member for environment and climate emergency, Cllr Ian Shenton.
Mr Humphreys said that he ‘enquired whether it would be possible to have a small one’ but that upon contact with the council he was told there were two sizes – large or extra large.
He then said: “You’ll be familiar with the quote ‘build it and they will come’ in the Hollywood movie Field of Dreams. It would seem WBC environment services have amended this to the mantra ‘supply it and they will fill it’ by providing enormous bins and challenging residents to fill them."
He went on to say that it is ‘totally contrary to the government’s aim of reducing waste by encouraging recycling’.
He further complained that the ‘ugly’ bins block his side alley and have to be lifted, which is ‘near impossible for a pensioner when full’.
Mr Humphreys will hear his response at the council meeting, as well as have the opportunity to ask a supplementary question.
