One of Bracknell's oldest pubs has been given the green light to undergo 'urgently needed' repairs.
The Old Manor on Grenville Place, which dates back to the 15th Century, applied for permission to extend its ground floor long bar after removing the ale store and replacing it with a wash up area. Pub chain JD Wetherspoon needed planning permission for the internal changes to the listed building.
A statement sent to the council said: “The building dates from the 15th Century and originally was of timber framed construction but has been successfully altered from that date and now presents itself as a largely brick structure, with the core of the medieval hall house encased within.”
Bracknell Forest Council planning officers decided that the proposals were ‘considered appropriate for the listed building’ on July 25.
It comes after the pub needed ‘urgent repairs’ when a section of its ceiling collapsed in May last year. Because it is a listed building the pub needed to apply for planning permission to use lath and plaster to be used to patch up the hole.
The council agreed that this was necessary to preserve the listed building in July 2023.
The building that now houses the pub was once two large Tudor houses, and even features a 'priest hole' where Catholic priests would hide from persecution after their faith was outlawed.
