Bracknell residents are "absolutely disgusted" at their litter-ridden neighbourhood, likened to a "third world country".

Photos from the Harmans Water and Crown Wood areas show overflowing bins and scattered rubbish, sparking outrage from people in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Mr Lewis Currington has rallied 61 locals, planning regular community clean-up events, named 'Community Picks'.

Their first event, with 21 potential attendees, is scheduled for August 10 at 9am.

Litter picking groups have become a prominent feature in communities hoping to keep neighbourhoods and park clean and attractive looking.

An excess of litter is known to attract unwelcome wildlife to nearby homes.

Cllr Helen Purnell, executive member for the environment, community and housing, said:

“The summer holidays are a popular time for residents to enjoy visiting our parks and open spaces. Frustratingly, there is also usually a noticeable increase in the amount of litter being left behind by visitors. This year is no different.

“Littering is illegal, anti-social and has a negative impact on our environment. Dumped rubbish ruins these spaces for other visitors and it can harm local wildlife.

“Our rangers, contractors and volunteers do fantastic work to help us keep council managed areas, clean and safe. However, they shouldn’t have to pick up other people’s rubbish. This diverts their time away from other important work which is required to look after these spaces for people and wildlife.

“There is no excuse for littering. When out and about, take your litter home with you. This includes where public rubbish bins are full or unavailable. Parents can help by encouraging their children to protect their local parks when out with friends. They can put their rubbish in a public bin or bring their bottles and cans home with them to be recycled. Any issues with public bins can be reported on our website.”
