Berkshire MPs have met with police leaders today amidst concerns of Muslim community safety in the area.

This comes as violence broke out last week following the fatal stabbing of three young girls at a dance class in Southport, Merseyside.

Riots have taken place across the country after misinformation about the immigration status of the man charged, Axel Rudakubana, spread online.

This has led to many mosques being targeted during riots across the country.

Local politicians in Berkshire have been briefed about the potential threat of civil unrest and disorder in the wake of national disorder across the UK.

Clive Jones, MP for Wokingham told the News that he has spoken with the Deputy Chief Constable and Assistant Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police today. He said he received ‘reassurance’ that the Muslim community will have security needs met.

Mr Jones said: “Firstly, how sorry I am that all of this has started wit the deaths of these three children, and that far right groups have used that very tragic event to try and create violence and disorder, I think it’s really sad.”

He added that the ‘robust’ response from the police and government has been ‘absolutely right’.

Mr Jones will be attending a prayer session in Wokingham this Friday.

The Bracknell Muslim community has told the News that they are 'really scared' amid the ongoing violence.

This comes as reports of potential protest taking place in Reading have circulated online today (July 7).

Thames Valley Police have issued a warning over protest ‘misinformation’ after rumours of a protest taking place in Reading have been spreading online.

The Reading Chronicle has reported that as of yet, no unrest has been noticed – but many shops on Reading High Street have closed due to fears of protests. A live blog of the events as they unfold can be read here

Mr Jones said that ‘not all the things that we see on social media are going to happen’, but that MPs had been ‘advised’ about the possible protest this afternoon.

Thames Valley Police have also released a statement warning against disinformation spreading on social media.

He added that he was confident with Thames Valley Police’s work so far: “Police are demonstrating to us that they are very on top of this. If that materialises they will, police will do the best they can with the resources they’ve got.”
