Nominations for this year’s Mayor’s Honour Awards, which celebrate the Wokingham Borough’s everyday heroes, are open.

The awards celebrate and recognise people who make an outstanding contribution to their community.

Nominations are open to adults, children, young people and community groups who work, live, study or provide services in the borough.

Winners receive a lapel badge and certificate, while group winners will receive a shield and certificate at an event next year.

Nominated people can include fosterers, volunteers, carers or teachers, for example. In the children and young people category, the awards are open for people who have overcome a difficult situation or have an outstanding achievement, such as in the sports or arts.

Previous winners have included Alex Baker, for ten years of volunteering with Wokingham Libraries and running a teen writing group, and Michael Shult, for his drive to get more girls playing football at Laurel park Football club.

You can nominate an individual or organisation for the upcoming deadline of September 1, or later on November 1, or January 1.

Nomindations should be no longer than 100 words and should set out why the nominee should be considered for the award. The nominees full name and contact details should also be included.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will review nominations on a regular basis, and once a decision is made recipients will be informed by email or letter. They will also be announced at full council meetings, which take place throughout the year.

Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Adrian Mather said: “What may seem ordinary to you may actually be the act of selflessness, bravery or dedication that we are looking for, so if you know someone that deserves to be recognised, write to us and they may be chosen.”
