A NEW library in Twyford has seen a 59 per cent increase in book loans.
The library, located in the former Old Polehampton Boys School, opened its doors to the new venue on Thursday, June 13, after moving across the road to Polehampton Close.
Wokingham Borough Council said that the move allowed for the creation of ‘a beautiful new library space’ with improved spaces, high ceilings, and large windows.
Council leader Stephen Conway celebrated the success of the new site at a recent full council meeting.
Cllr Conway said: “I am delighted to say that the new Twyford Library has been well received by the local community.”
He said that the 59 per cent increase in book loans during the first six weeks compared to the same time last year demonstrated the ‘enthusiasm’ of residents.
The new building also includes a specially designed children’s area.
Wokingham Borough Council said that the site of the new library would bring ‘a local landmark back to life’. The Grade II listed building had previously been sat empty for years.
Upon the opening of the library, Cllr Conway said: “Local libraries offer so much more for people than just books. They offer a lifeline for the community, and especially for those who might be struggling or feeling isolated.”
