A group of locals have set out to tackle ‘disgusting’ levels of littering in their area.

Lewis Currington from Harmans Water and Crown Wood has joined forces with like-minded neighbours to tackle discarded waste on their streets.

The 61-strong group has formed as ‘Community Picks’, planning regular community clean-up events. The group recently completed their first litter-picking session, which saw 17 volunteers collect 27 large bags worth of waste.

Mr Currington told the News: “We’re absolutely disgusted by the state of our area. Scattered with litter, resembling a third-world country at points.”

His group has received support from Bracknell Forest Council, who provided equipment.  The resident added that the group has over 70 people on social media, which is ‘growing everyday’.

Bracknell MP Peter Swallow has also accepted an invitation to join the group, as well as other councillors. Members of Wild Bracknell, a group aimed at enhancing nature across the Bracknell Forest Borough, also took part.

Bracknell Forest councillor Helen Purnell, executive member for the environment, community and housing, said: “The summer holidays are a popular time for residents to enjoy visiting our parks and open spaces.

“Frustratingly, there is also usually a noticeable increase in the amount of litter being left behind by visitors. This year is no different.”

Members of the group have said more events are planned for the coming months. Free kits for litter-picking can also be ordered through Bracknell Forest Council’s Take Pride scheme. Up to two sets of equipment can be ordered for residents inspired by community picks.
